Princess Louise-Marie was born on 15 July 1737, at Versailles, France. She was the youngest of the children of Maria Leszczyńska, Queen Consort of France and Navarre (23 June 1703 - 24 June 1768) and Louis XV, King of France and Navarre (15 February 1710 - 10 May 1774). Her maternal grandparents were Katarzyna Opalińska (13 October 1680 - 19 March 1747) and Stanislas Leszczynski (20 October 1677 - 23 January 1766). Her paternal grandparents were Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy (6 December 1685 - 12 February 1712) and Louis, Duc de Bourgogne. Louise-Marie's parents were married on 4 September 1725. Her siblings included: Louise-Elisabeth (14 August 1727 - 6 December 1759), Henriette-Anne (14 August 1727 - 10 February 1752), Marie-Louise (28 July 1728 - 19 February 1733), Louis, Dauphin de France (4 September 1729 - 20 December 1765), Philippe (30 August 1730 - 17 April 1733), Marie Adélaïde (23 March 1732 - 27 February 1800), Victoire Louise (11 May 1733 - 7 June 1799), Sophie-Philippine (17 July 1734 - 3 March 1782) and Thérèse-Félicité (16 May 1736 - 28 September 1744). Known as Madame Louise, she was brought up at the Abbey of Fontevraud with her sisters, Victoire, Sophie and Thérèse-Félicité. In September 1745, the King took as his maîtresse en titre, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson (1721-1764). Her brother, Louis, Dauphin de France married his second wife Princess Marie Josèphe of Saxony (1731-1767) on 9 February 1747.

Madame Louise was painted by the French artist, Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) in 1748 and 1760.  In 1750, she returned to the Court. Her sister, Henriette-Anne died in 1752. Her father's mistress, Madame du Pompadour died on 15 April 1764, in Paris, France. His new mistress was a former courtesan, Madame du Barry. Her brother, Louis de France died of consumption on 20 December 1765, at Fontainebleau. Her mother, Maria died on 24 June 1768, at Versailles.

Her nephew, Louis Auguste, Dauphin de France (1754-1793) married Maria Antonia, Archduchess of Austria (1755-1793) on 16 May 1770, at the Chapel Royal, the Château de Versailles, in Versailles. In February 1770, Madame Louise entered the Carmelite Convent of Saint-Denis. With the veil, she received her new name, Thérèse of St. Augustine. Her father, Louis XV died of smallpox on 10 May 1774. He was succeeded by his grandson, as Louis XVI with Marie Antoinette as his Consort. Thérèse of St. Augustine died on 23 December 1787, at Saint-Denis. Her last words were; "Au paradis! Vite! Au grand galop!" ("To heaven! Quickly! At the gallop!"). Pope Pius IX declared her Venerable on 19 June 1873. Thérèse of St. Augustine is celebrated on 23 December.
